Usage

Older styles of fax used a roll of thermal paper (similar to today’s receipt printers) to print off received faxes. It was about the width of a regular piece of letter / A4 sized paper.

When a fax was received, it would print onto the thermal paper and mechanically cut the paper between each received page.

Today’s fax machines rarely use fax rolls for their paper supply, as many fax machines print through laser or ink printer systems.
